Two Nova Scotian Axes and an Old Canadian Axe
All of the axes are shown next to the Gransfors Scandinavian Forest Axe.
The Walters Black Diamond Forest Axe is a perfect size for camping as well as splitting kindlin. This axe is estimated to be from the 1940s.
The second axe is a Blenkhorn Camp Splitting Axe. I am unsure the age of the axe, but I would estimate it around 80-100 years old. The head weighs around 2 and 3/4 pounds.
From the recent advertisement of the used axe:
"This vintage axe was made by the Blenkhorn & Sons Axe Co of Canning NS, 1866-1962. The head is heavy for an axe this size as you see by the thickness of the metal around the eye. It had a user made handle and is a great piece on Nova Scotia industrial history."
And finally, a Blenkhorn Cruiser. This is a relatively difficult to find axe. The stamp is "BC", and "3 1/4", however, I do not think that is quite the weight. This is an excellent working axe.
Is the Cruiser the double bitted axe? I think I just got one at a yardsale.
ReplyDeleteI have a Cruiser myself. Its marked lightly blenkhorn diagonally on one side halfway between the eye and the bit and BC on the other side and 3 3/4 on the eye nice and deep. Blue and yellow handles are normal for oem hafts and my handle appears to be maple
